John Morris is aware of all about luck.
The Charlottetown-based photographer has been travelling all across Canada chasing the great shot. In some cases he receives it, occasionally he does not. But for him maybe the luckiest break of all is getting to do this for a residing.

Tell us a tiny little bit about your path to getting an Island photographer.
I have often been interested in just driving close to and taking photos. Decades ago prior to I did it professionally, that was a key passion and interest of mine. Certainly now for the last a lot of yrs, I have been undertaking it skillfully and have experienced the enjoyment of driving from coastline to coast and examining out our Island sights and checking out new places.
When we first met, you have been sort of included in the environment of tech. What was it like for you to make a leap like this and to throw on your own into pictures entire time?
It was in fact truly easy. I experienced a career supply from a alternatively large organization in the States and I re-evaluated my lifetime declaring, “Do I want to get the job done in an office the rest of my everyday living or do I want to do some thing else like be outdoors?”
That was when I was just having into images. So I shifted my path. And numerous decades later, right here we are.
Do you go out with like a location in brain or do you hold out until finally it can be the perfect working day? Do you just travel and then something catches your eye? All of the previously mentioned?
It truly is all of the earlier mentioned, depending on the condition. In November, I drove to Cape Breton to test to capture the Northern Lights. Me and a friend went up and we have been only there for 24 hours. However, regrettably, the Northern Lights only lasted about five minutes. And then we drove back again.
You hardly ever 100 for every cent know what is likely to take place. Often you drive wanting for a unique shot like in that case or in the case of storms, lightning. And then other periods, you happen to be just out randomly driving.
You mention lightning. You can find a placing image in your e book. It’s the Basilica in downtown Charlottetown with lightning in the sky. Was that just proper place, suitable time?
That just one was type of a little bit extra prepared. That night time, I was knowledgeable there was a storm coming our way and I started out off on Decreased Queen Street. I understood I wanted the church in the shot. And it was just sit there and ready, hoping that lightning arrives.
Your travels with photography, the place have those people taken you by the decades?
I have gone all over the place from Newfoundland to B.C. I just received back again from a journey to Montreal. At the stop of the day, it is a large amount of kilometres on your car, and it’s a large amount of enjoyment.
It is unbelievably fortunate to be capable to practical experience the Maritimes like that. And all throughout Canada, you get to see the absolute very best of folks.
Your ebook is named Chasing Light on Prince Edward Island. What can you convey to us about that “mild” and what it presents you?
It’s usually a transforming ecosystem. For instance, my business office is in downtown Charlottetown. I walk down the street a million situations, and it is that one time that the light is just unquestionably great: That is what definitely matters at the conclude of the day, getting that 1 shot. It truly is obtaining all the disorders just unquestionably great.
What can you tell us about some of the other illustrations or photos that you’ve captured in this article throughout P.E.I.?
The address is actually centered on a image I took when I arrived back house in the slide. I bear in mind I was home for a working day and I desired to get up to the North Shore. And it just transpired to be the time of the 12 months that the farmers are harvesting in their fields.
I received out, it was that great sunset and it characteristics some combines just going to the field. Just an absolutely ideal instant and it was just a random travel. I knew I desired to go to the North Shore and I didn’t really know what I was going to capture. As luck would have it, I had the most gorgeous sunset. And certainly the farmers have been out functioning absent.
And you’ve got bought lighthouses and lupins and you’ve obtained fishing, wharves — all varieties of points in in this article.
Yeah. Naturally with us getting an island, there is a weighty emphasis on the water ingredient. A whole lot of the photos do aspect our lovely coastal landscapes that we have.
This is element of a e book collection. What can you explain to us about some of these other guide tasks?
So the other book that came out the precise same time is called Chasing Mild in Nova Scotia, and it is really equivalent concept. This calendar year I am hoping to launch four publications. I need to get again to Newfoundland and get some imagery from there since there is a large amount of demand from customers for me to get illustrations or photos in Newfoundland. And then the fourth one is heading to be a e book on Atlantic Canada lighthouses.
Where do the travels take you subsequent? What are the ideas for the months forward?
I want to get to Newfoundland to get some iceberg shots, but I is not going to have a great deal time simply because I have currently been assigned to photograph the Memorial Cup in Saint John this year.
Seems like a pretty enjoyable way to make a dwelling.
I’m amazingly lucky just being equipped to journey. And, there’s a sure element where by you happen to be not positive in which you might be going to be following. I remember very last yr I was in western New Brunswick photographing a lightning storm. That afternoon, I obtained a telephone contact from Reuters or an e-mail asking about likely to Southwest Nova. So you hardly ever know where by you might be going to be at times. And it can be a large amount of pleasurable.
